This award-winning small house was featured in "New Compact House Designs" by Don Metz.
The design was inspired by the traditional homes of Vermont. Steeply pitched roofs, clapboard siding, and 1 1/2 story construction were some of the elements used to create a home for a family on a limited construction budget.
The design makes the most of a small footprint by "deconstructing the box"- opening up the interior with an open floor plan. Areas flow into each other for the feeling of space.
I'm showing two of the many great examples built across the country. The Plainfield, New Hampshire house has added a walk-out basement on the east gable, taking advantage of the sloping site.
The Washington State house, besides its spectacular Cascade Mountain setting, has wrapped the porch around the east gable.
